Eminent Persons comment on Tippu's Genocide in Malabar

First Jihad Against Hindus Of Malabar- Part 4

Let us see what the Quran says, “Allah revealed His Will to the Angels saying ‘I shall be with you, give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, maim them in every limb. “(Surah 8: Ayat 12). So you see, such acts of violence, inhuman torture and barbarism, have been considered sacred duties of every Muslim in Islamic theology and practice, inspired by the ‘Holy’ Quran itself.

So what do the original sources tell us about Tippu?

“The first thing that Ali Raja of Cannanore did after his appointment as the Naval Chief of Hyder Ali's army, was to capture the King of Laccadives and present him to Hyder Ali after gouging out the eyes of the helpless victim (p. 459). Later the fisherfolk living there were forcibly converted to Islam. According to the report of Gen. Abercromby of Bombay who was in Kerala supervising the English Company's operations, "Moplahs are fanatic Muslims who are also treacherous by nature. From the repeated treachery and notorious infidelity of the whole Moplahs race, rigid and terrifying measures have become indispensably necessary. Lenity (towards Moplahs) has been found ineffectual" [Tippu Sultan, Villain Or Hero. An Anthology. Voice Of India, New Delhi. Pg 533.]

In the words of Ravi Varma, one of the contributors to the anthology: "It was Tippu Sultan and his fanatic Muslim army who converted thousands of Hindus to Islam all along the invasion route and occupied areas in North Kerala, Coorg, Mangalore, and other parts of Karnataka. Besides over 8,000 Hindu temples were desecrated and/or destroyed by his Muslim army. Even today, one can see large concentrations of Muslims and ruins of hundreds of destroyed temples in North Kerala as standing evidence of the Islamic brutalities committed by Tippu Sultan ... He was, all through, waging a cruel Islamic war against the unarmed Hindu population of Kerala, with a large Muslim army and ably assisted by the French with powerful field guns and European troops. ...”

The anthology also quotes from ‘A Voyage to the East Indies’ by Fra Barthoelomeo, a renowned Portuguese traveller and historian, who was present in Tippu’s war zone in early 1790: "First a corps of 30,000 barbarians who butchered everybody on the way ... followed by the field gun unit under the French commander, M. Lally. Tippu was riding on an elephant behind which another army of 30,000 soldiers followed. Most of the men and women were hanged in Calicut, first mothers were hanged with their children tied to necks of mothers. That barbarian Tippu Sultan tied the naked Christian and Hindus to the legs of elephants and made the elephants to move around till the bodies of the helpless victims were torn to pieces. Temples and churches were ordered to be burned down, desecrated, and destroyed. ... Moreover, evidence of Tippu"s atrocities abounds in many contemporary church records in Mangalore, Calicut, and Varapphuza."

The anthology includes excerpts from Tippu"s letters as researched by the distinguished Kerala historian K. M. Panicker, which he reviewed in the Bhasha Poshini magazine, August 1923:

1. Letter dated March 22, 1788, to Abdul Kadir: "Over 12,000 Hindus were 'honoured' with Islam. There were many Namboodiris (Brahmins) among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. There the local Hindus should be brought before you and then converted to Islam. No Namboodiri (Brahmin) should be spared. Also they should be confined there till the dress materials sent for them, reach you."

2. Letter dated December 14, 1788, to his Army Chief in Calicut: "I am sending two of my followers with Mir Hussain Ali. With their assistance, you should capture and kill all Hindus. Those below 20 may be kept in prison and 5,000 from the rest should be killed by hanging from the tree-tops. These are my orders."

3. Letter dated December 21, 1788, to Sheik Kutub: "242 Nairs are being sent as prisoners. Categorise them according to their social and family status. After honouring them with Islam, sufficient dress materials may be given to the men and their women."

4. Letter dated January 18, 1790, to Syed Abdul Dulai: "With the grace of Prophet Muhammed and Allah, almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. Only a few are still not converted on the borders of Cochin State. I am determined to convert them also very soon. I consider this as Jehad to achieve that object."

5. Letter dated January 19, 1790, to Badroos Saman Khan: "Don't you know that I have achieved a great victory recently in Malabar and over 4 lakh Hindus were converted to Islam. I am now determined to march against that 'Cursed Raman Nair' without delay. (Reference is to Rama Varma Raja of Travancore Kingdom who was popularly known as Dharma Raja for giving shelter in his state to all those who fled Malabar.)

Thinking that he and his subjects would be soon converted to Islam, I am overjoyed and hence abandoned the idea of returning to Srirangapatanam."

Historian Hayavadana C. Rao asserted that Tippu's "religious fanaticism and the excesses committed in the name of religion, both in Mysore and in the provinces, stand condemned for all time. His bigotry, indeed, was so great that it precluded all ideas of toleration". He further asserts that the acts of Tippu that were constructive towards Hindus were largely political and ostentatious rather than an indication of genuine tolerance. [Hayavadana C. Rao, History of Mysore 1399-1799: Incorporating the latest Epigraphical, Literary and Historical Researches Vol. 3 pgs 1047-53, Bangalore Government Press.]

The nightmarish results of Tippu's invasion of Kerala have been aptly described by the former editor of Gazetteer of Kerala and the renowned historian A. Sreedhara Menon.

"But in reality, he was only a religious fanatic who believed in converting as many Hindus to Islam, and killing those who didn’t fall in line. Living in Kerala, one does not have to read historical books to know about Tippu"s oppression. It was just a few generations back and Tippu"s cruelty is a part of the folk-lore. Temples relocated, idols (some of them even made of gold) buried (some of them recently recovered) and people resettled, in the wake of Tippu’s military campaign ("padayottam" as it is locally known)." [Meanderthalis, "Tippu Sultan - the Glorified Butcher?" August 28, 2006.]

One of the leading Congressman of pre-independence days, K. Madhava Nair, observes on page 14 of his famous book, Malabar Kalapam (Mappila outrage): "The communal Mappila (Moplah) outrage of 1921 in Malabar could be easily traced to the forcible mass conversion and related Islamic atrocities of Tippu Sultan during his cruel military regime from 1783 to 1792.”

Dr. P.C.C. Raja, a direct descendent of the Zamorin of Calicut, writes in the anthology: "TIPPU SULTAN WAS ONE OF THE WORST FANATICS, AND MORE INHUMAN THAN EVEN THE NAZIS."

According to Lewis B. Boury, the atrocities committed by Tippu Sultan against Hindus in Malabar were worse and more barbarous than those committed against the Hindus in Hindustan by the notorious MAHMUD OF GHAZNI, ALAUDDIN KHALJI, AND NADIR SHAH.

“Unfortunately, there are no memorials erected anywhere in Kodungallur, or Trichur, or Alwaye to honour Dharma Raja who gave shelter in his state to thousands of Hindus escaping from the Islamic brutalities of the fanatic Tippu Sultan; or to Ayyappan Marthanda Pillai who was the architect of the historic Nedumkotta; or to Raja Keshavadas under whose direct command a comparatively small army humbled and defeated the vast hordes of the invading army of Tippu Sultan; or to the scores of valiant Hindu soldiers who laid down their lives to protect their country, their culture and their ancient faith.” [Anthology. Appendix 2]

It’s high time that the new generation Hindus are told the true Story of this Jihadi Tippu Sultan that he is not a Hero but a Villain in our History.

Unfortunately, we, the Hindus, have had to suffer a continuous history of conquests and foreign rule for over seven centuries.

The widespread atrocities committed by the Islamic tyrant and his equally cruel army of Muslim converts in Kerala, can be understood only from the authentic records available from various sources. According to them, about half the Hindu population of Malabar fled the country to the forests or Tellicherry and Travancore Kingdom. They included most of the Hindu Rajas and chieftains who could not stand up to the mighty army of Muslim barbarian rape-warriors and the powerful field-guns of the French. Important royal families which migrated to Travancore Kingdom were those of Chirackal, Parappanad, Ballussery, Kurumbranad, Kadathanad, Palghat and Calicut. The chieftain families which did the same were those of Punnathur, Kavalappara, Azhvancherry Thamprakkal, etc. Even the Cochin royal family moved to Vaikkom Palace near the famous Shiva Temple when Tippu's army reached Alwaye.

Many members of the royal families of Malabar who migrated to Travancore Kingdom preferred to stay back even after the withdrawal of Tippu's army and restoration of peace, because of their nightmarish experience of the Moplah atrocities in the past and the peculiar psyche of the forcibly converted Muslim population in Malabar. The prominent royal families were (1) Neerazhi Kovilakam, (2) Gramathil Kottaram, (3) Paliyakkara, (4) Nedumparampu, (5) Chempra Madham, (6) Ananthapuram Kottaram, (7) Ezhimatoor Palace, (8) Aranmula Kottaram, (9) Varanathu Kovilakam, (10) Mavelikkara, (11) Ennakkadu, (12) Murikkoyikkal Palace, (13) Mariappilly, (14) Koratti Swaroopam, (15) Kaippuzha Kovilakam, (16) Lakshmipuram Palace, and (17) Kottapuram.

The secularist admirers of Tippu Sultan have not bothered to read the records available with these Malabar families.

According to the renowned historian A. Sreedhara Menon, "Hindus, especially Nairs and chieftains who resisted Islamic cruelties, were the main targets of Tippu's anger. Hundreds of Nair women and children were abducted to Sreerangapatanam or sold as slaves to the Dutch. Nairs were hunted down and killed and also deprived of all traditional and social privileges. Thousands of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Nairs and other respected classes of Hindus were forcibly converted to Islam or driven out of their traditional ancestral homes. Thousands sought refuge in Travancore Kingdom while hundreds fled to forests and hills to escape Tippu's atrocities which had completely shaken their sense of security."

"The new phase of Mysore administration in Kerala resulted in unending wars. Extreme cruelties inflicted by the invading army on the hapless Hindu populace had badly affected every section of the society, leading to the mass exodus of people from Malabar."

Elankulam Kunjan Pillai has recorded the situation in Malabar as follows: "Kozhikode was then a centre of Brahmins. There were around 7000 Namboodiri houses of which more than 2000 houses were destroyed by Tippu Sultan in Kozhikode alone. Sultan did not spare even children and women. Men folk escaped to the forests and the neighboring principalities. During the military regime of Tippu Sultan, Hindus were forcibly circumcised and converted to Muhammadan faith. As a result the number of Nairs and Brahmins declined substantially."

The Hindu population in coastal Kerala has been reduced to 'less than 20 per cent,' if one goes by the 'assessment' of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's Kerala unit.

The Saudi-funded PFI intends making Kerala a Muslim majority State, by 2050. They have chosen love Jihad the route for this conquest of land without external invasion.

Lt. Col. E. Phitiyan, Andriansi, Mayan, K.P. Padmanabha Menon Sadasyathilakan T.K. Velu Pillai, Ullur S. Parameshwara Iyer, and other prominent people have described vividly the various types of atrocities committed by Tippu Sultan during the days of his Islamic rule in Malabar. There is no count of the Hindus’ wealth looted from their temples and taken away by Tippu to Sreerangapatanam.

"Many prosperous towns were destroyed while the local and foreign trade collapsed. Peasants who had to bear the brunt of army cruelties and coercive taxation policies, sought refuge in forests and mountains. In many areas, cultivation of pepper stopped resulting in the collapse of pepper trade. Consequent to the stoppage of foreign trade coupled with the precipitate fall in cultivation and local trade, economy of the country was also shattered; and major sections of the people were reduced to poverty. Thus every section of society was badly affected by the military regime of the Mysore rulers."

"Many Hindu temples, royal houses and chieftain families were destroyed and plundered. The exodus of Brahmins and Kshatriyas who were the patrons and custodians of traditional arts and culture resulted in stagnation in the cultural field also."

"Huge amount of wealth in the form of gold and silver accumulated through centuries of foreign trade, vanished from the country as a result of loot and plunder during the chaotic period of the military regime of Hyder Ali and his son, Tippu Sultan. Another serious development which had long term bad effects was that Malabar Muslims joined hands with the ranks of cruel invading Mysore army and proved their loyalty to Islamic faith by committing various atrocities against Malabar Hindus. This earned them enmity of Hindus. To gain political advantage, they resorted to forcible conversion of Hindus to Islam and also widespread destruction and plunder of Hindu temples.

The Mysore administration under the Muslim rulers had not only encouraged Moplah cruelties against the Hindu population but also gave the local Muslim converts special privileges and tax exemptions, leading to serious cleavage and enmity for the first time, between the two communities, Hindus and Muslims, in Kerala."

VHP Kerala Secretary Kummanam Rajasekharan told "An Islamic religious conspiracy is on to drive out Hindus from the Kerala coast." He alleged that anti-national outfits like Al-Umma and Laskhar-e-Tayiba are "actively engaged" in Kerala at the behest of Pakistan's Inter Service Intelligence agency to drive out Hindus from coastal areas.

In Malabar the Moplahs increased many fold due to forcible conversion and now that region sends jihadi suicide-bombers to fight the Indian Army in the Kashmir Valley. Many of them have been arrested in Kashmir valley by our Army.

These persons are imparted training in two phases in the conditioning camps. The initial part of the training or the conditioning camp takes place in Kerala while the rest of the training is imparted in Kashmir. These youth are taught about the war against India. More importantly, they are taught Urdu so that they can communicate at ease with their counterparts and bosses in Pakistan. The second phase of the training includes arms training, which is imparted in Kashmir. Apart from this, the Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) also set up the primary base of the Indian Mujahideen in Kerala in order to carry out terror activities in India. Source:

The explosives used in the serial blasts that rocked New Delhi on September 13, 2008 were made by E T Sainudheen alias Sathar Bahi, a bomb-making expert from Kondotty in Malappuram district. Riyaz Bhatkal, the kingpin of the Indian Mujahideen who is now absconding had sent them to Delhi to Muhammad Saif. Muhammad Saif, was arrested from Batla House at Jamia Nagar on September 19, 2008 and the Delhi Police gleaned the details from Muhammad Saif during interrogation.

Kerala's coastline is open to clandestine operations from the sea. There is a systematic effort to clear the coastline of all non-Muslims. Madrasas and mosques are coming up in large numbers all along the coastline. And some of these have become hubs of anti-national activities. The very fact that the murderers at Marad beach were arrested from the local Jama Masjid and also a huge cache of deadly weapons was unearthed from the Mosque buttresses this point.

It is now to this jihadi-dominated Malabar that the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of India's mortal foe, Pakistan sends containers full of counterfeit Indian currency for distribution through its various local Islamic cells with the intention of undermining the Indian economy.

The Mysore Gazetteer says that the ravaging army of Tippu Sultan had destroyed more than 8000 temples in South India. The temples of Malabar and Cochin principalities had to bear the brunt of plunder and destruction. The History of Cochin by K.P. Padmanabha Menon and History of Kerala by A. Sreedhara Menon narrate some of them:

"In the month of Chingam 952, Malayalam Era (corresponding to August, 1786) Tippu's Army destroyed idols of the famous Perumanam Temple and desecrated all the temples between Trichur and Karuvannur river. "

Hemambika Temple of Kallekulangara, also known as Emoor Bhagavathy temple, the Family Deity (Kula Devata) of the royal family of Palakkad.

Keraladhiswara Maha Vishnu Temple, Tanur Town, Malappuram Dist.

Jain Temple in Palghat .

"Irinjalakuda Tiruvilvamala Temple dedicated to Rama and Lakshmana. It is a twin temple complex situated on top of Vilvadri Hill which is located to the North of Thrissur Town.

Mammiyur Siva Temple in Guruvayur Town.

Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple, in Methala Panchayat, south of Kodungallur Municipal town on NH 17.

Triprangode Siva Temple near Tirur.

Thrichabaram Sri Krishna Temple near Taliparamba, Kannur Dist.

Taliparamba Siva Temple, Kannur District.

Tiruvanjikulam Siva temple near Kodungallur.

Vadakkum-Nathan Temple of Trichur.

Varakkal DurgaTemple, West Hill Kozhikode.

Trikkandiyur Mahadeva Temple, Tirur Town, Malappuram Dist.

Sukapuram Dakshinaamoorthy Temple, near Edappal, Malappuram.

Vadukunda Siva temple at Vengara village Kannur District.

Narasimha Temple at Naduvannur, Kozhikode District.

Pariharapuram Subrahmanya Temple, Ramanathakara, Kozhikode District.

Vadukunda Siva Temple of Madai, Kannur District.

Thrikkavu Durga Temple of Ponnani was converted into Military Garrison.

According to the Malabar Gazetteer, the following important temples were destroyed by Tippu's Army.

Tali Mahadeva Temple, Kozhikode.

Sree Valayanadu Bhagavathy Temple, Govindapuram, Calicut.

Tiruvannur Siva Temple, Kozhikode.

Shri thirpuraikal Bhadrakali Temple, Puthur, Palakkad District.

Narayankannur temple at Ramantali, Kannur District.

Even the Tirunavaya Temple known all over India as a centre of Rig Veda teaching was destroyed. Tippu personally ordered the destruction of Calicut which was the capital of the Zamorin Rajas.

In the case of Triprayar Temple, the main deity was shifted temporarily to Gnanappilly Mana situated in a remote village. However, both of them were brought back and ceremoniously installed after the withdrawal of Tippu from Malabar towards the end of 1790.

Following the route of his father Hyder Ali who attacked Guruvayur in 1766, Tippu Sultan attacked Guruvayur temple in 1789 after destroying the Mammiyur Shiva Temple and two other Sri Krishna Temples in the vicinity of the famous Guruvayur Temple. Those two Sri Krishna Temples destroyed in the town of Guruvayur by Tippu have being recovered by the Hindus; one is being renovated as the Parthasarathy Temple and the other one as Tirupathy Balaji Temple.

The 4,000 year old Narasimhamoorthy Temple near Angadipuram was destroyed by Tippu’s Army, rebuilt in 1946 and destroyed again by the Moplah Muslims. is the website of that Narasimhamoorthy Temple which is now being reconstructed.

A large band of Moplah fanatics desecrated the Tiru-mandham-kunnu Bhagawati shrine at Angadipuram, Valluvanadu Taluk. [Pg 186, Malabar Manual. by William Logan (1841-1914) . Logan was a Scottish officer of the Madras Civil Service under the British Government. Before his appointment as Collector of Malabar, he had served in the area for about twenty years in the capacity of Magistrate and Judge. The highly acclaimed Malabar Manual was the result of his strenuous research and study of various official records, oral history, and legends of Kerala. To commemorate this British official's work and life in Thalassery town, the main road that cuts across the town is named after him as "Logan's Road".]

The Muslim mosque at Kathiroor, near Chokli in Kannur District is almost a temple. Historians feel that it was originally a temple but converted into a mosque in the wake of Hyder Ali’s or Tippu’s destructive march over Kerala.

The Malabar Manual mentions that the Maniyoor mosque was once a Hindu temple. The local belief is that it was converted to a mosque during the days of Tippu Sultan.

According to certain personal diary notes of Tippu Sultan, the Chirackal Raja offered to pay over Rs. 4 lakh in gold and silver to save the destruction of the local Hindu temples by Tippu's army. But, true to his fanatical jihadi character, Tippu replied that "even if the entire world is offered to me, I will not desist from destroying Hindu temples" (Freedom Struggle by Sardar Panicker). It was the reply of a typical Islamic ruler!

Tippu’s jihadi soldiers made it a point to slaughter cows en masse. To rub it in, they always slaughtered a cow at the very spot where a Hindu moorti was worshipped, before erecting a mosque in its place. Most of the time, the moorti was smashed and placed at the steps of some mosque for the “faithful” Muslims to tread upon as they came for prayer.

In the wake of that murderous jihadi aggression by the barbarous Muslim Tippu Sultan more than eighty percent of the temples were destroyed in Malabar.
